Slight Revision vs AI site builders

AI site builders, after the first draft.

“I described my business and it built a website.” It really does. We use AI every day ourselves, so this is not a page about whether the tools are impressive. It is about who owns the result and who is responsible for it next year.

For the record, we use these tools too. daily.

What it is

Describe it, and something appears.

“AI site builder” now covers a lot of different products. Some live directly inside AI assistants: ChatGPT Sites, for example, can create and host interactive websites and lightweight apps from a conversation and is in public beta as we write this. Others add AI generation to established builders, which Wix, Squarespace and GoDaddy all now do. Newer products generate sites or code from a prompt, and some of those let you take the code with you.

Many can produce an impressive first draft in minutes, from a few sentences. For a prototype, a launch page or an internal tool, that is genuinely useful, and we would say so to anyone.

Worth remembering: a first draft in minutes is real. so is year two.

The first draft

The first draft really is impressive.

We use AI every day ourselves. This is what these tools do brilliantly.

Astonishing first drafts

Layout, copy, images and structure from a paragraph of description. For getting an idea in front of people quickly, nothing beats it.

Great for fast, focused projects

Prototypes, launch pages, internal tools, event pages and experiments are especially good fits. You can get something useful in front of people remarkably quickly.

Cheap to try

Most of these are included in a subscription you may already pay for. The cost of finding out is close to zero.

When to use one

When an AI builder is the right tool.

Yes, we sell websites, so of course we think our way is valuable. The point of this page is to say where that value actually matters, and where it does not.

Choose an AI builder if…

  • You need a prototype, a launch page, an internal tool or a page for one event, and you are fine letting it go afterwards.
  • It is a personal project, and learning the tool is part of the fun.
  • You are comfortable owning whatever it produces, including the parts you cannot see.

Choose us if…

  • The site is how customers find you, contact you or pay you, and it has to keep working when nobody is watching.
  • You want a person responsible for it, and the domain and email handled along with it.
  • You would like the benefits of AI without betting the business on a beta.

After the draft

What the draft leaves to you.

Hosting, ownership, edits and fixes: the work that starts once the site is live.

Ownership and portability vary a lot

This is the question to ask before building something important. Some AI tools host the result entirely on their own platform. Some let you download the code. Some connect to outside hosting or repositories. Others are still in beta and changing quickly. Before a prototype becomes business infrastructure, find out what you actually own, what you can export, and what happens if you stop using the tool.

When it needs something the tool did not anticipate

A form that has to reach the right inbox, a booking that has to take a deposit, an accessibility requirement, a customer on an old phone. What happens next depends heavily on the product. Sometimes you can keep prompting. Sometimes you can edit or export the code. Sometimes you hit the edge of the hosted platform. That difference matters much more once the site becomes important.

Who is responsible after launch?

AI can build remarkably capable things. What it does not automatically provide is an ongoing relationship with someone who already knows the business, watches the site, handles the surrounding infrastructure, and takes responsibility when something changes six months later. Some platforms offer support, but that is different from having a team responsible for your specific website.

The domain, email and DNS are still there

This is the part every builder story has in common. The tool makes pages; someone still has to understand the domain, the email records and the connections between them. A client who left us for an AI builder called back within days holding a domain authorization code and no idea what to do with it.

How we use the tools

The tools, plus people who pick up the phone.

We are not against the tools. We use AI for research, drafts, code and checking our own work, and our sites are better for it. The difference is that a person is responsible for the result, and you own it.

  • Your website, content and domain are yours. If you ever stop working with us, the site can move to another WordPress host. Some tools, licenses and BrightFrame features we provide as part of our managed service may need to be replaced or licensed separately, but the website itself is not trapped here. If a tool we use disappears tomorrow, your site does not notice.
  • People who know your site and answer the phone, including when the problem is not the site.
  • AI where it helps: faster research, better first drafts, thorough checking. Judgment where it matters: what the site should do and why.
  • The domain, DNS, email, updates, backups and monitoring handled, not handed back to you.
  • Managed WordPress hosting with many ongoing tools included, at a price we have not raised in years.
  • A straight answer, including when an AI tool is the right choice for what you need.

Questions

AI builder questions, answered.

Including the obvious one: is this page just self-interest?

Do you use AI yourselves?

Yes, every day: research, drafts, code, and checking our own work. We think it makes the work better. We do not think it changes who should be responsible for a business’s website, which is a person you can call.

Can you take over a site an AI tool built?

We will look at it first. Sometimes the content is worth keeping and the site is rebuilt around it; sometimes the generated code is sound enough to host and maintain. We will tell you which before anyone spends money.

Is this page just self-interest?

Partly, and we would rather say so. We sell websites and hosting, so of course we think ours are worth it. The honest-answer section above is our attempt to be fair about when we are not the right choice.

Will AI make websites like yours unnecessary?

AI has already made first drafts dramatically faster and cheaper, and we use it for exactly that reason. We expect it to keep changing how websites are built. What our clients pay us for is not the privilege of typing every line by hand. They pay us to decide what should be built, make it work with the rest of their business, keep it running, and be responsible when something changes.

Found something that changed?

These tools move fast. If we have something wrong or out of date, tell us and we’ll fix it.
